Student Expectations
Student Pilots
Stage 1 (Pre-Solo)
- Perform an unassisted preflight
- Lookup frequencies and communicate with the appropriate people when transiting to Fox, Mojave, Rosamond or North Base
- Perform a takeoff briefing (normal takeoff and emergency procedures)
- Engine failure during takeoff roll or with runway remaining
- Engine failure after departure or with no runway remaining to stop
- Engine failure above a certain altitude
- "Any problem before rotation, power idle, max back pressure, max braking, stop on the runway head of us."
- "Any problem with runway remaining, land on the remaining runway."
- "Any problem with no runway remaining, pick a point within 30 degrees, pitch for best glide and prepare for a power off landing. That will involve opening the doors, mixture idle, fuel off, mags and master off."
- "If we are above 1000 ft and only if we are above 1000 ft will we attempt a turn back to the runway."
- "Any questions?"
- Perform a normal takeoff with proper callouts
- Runway verified
- Takeoff power set
- Engine gauges in the green
- Airspeed alive
- Perform a normal landing with no side-loading
- Understand spin recovery
Stage 2 (Post-Solo)
- Perform a crosswind landing with no side-loading
- Lookup frequencies and communicate with the appropriate people on a cross country
- Generate a cross country flight plan
- Utilize fuel, time, and distance to climb/descend
- Utilize cruise performance tables and determine an appropriate power setting
- Consider NWKRAFT and other preflight actions
- Divert to another airport while on a cross country
- Apply the PAVE checklist before flying
- P: IMSAFE, currency, proficiency
- A: AVIATES, performance, capabilities
- V: Weather, terrain, obstacles
- E: External pressures
Multi Pilots (Continue to fill in)
- Perform a takeoff briefing (normal takeoff and emergency procedures)
-
Engine failure prior to decision point
-
Engine failure after decision point
-
"Any problem before the decision point, power idle, stop/land on runway remaining."
-
"OEI problem after decision point, ...)
-
"Any questions?"
-
